Gunpowder explosion kills 5, injures dozens in Zamfara
At least five people have been confirmed dead, with many more injured following a gunpowder explosion at Talata Mafara Market in Zamfara State on Tuesday.
The blast, which occurred around 3:45 p.m., struck the market during the busy weekly trading hours. Shoppers and vendors were going about their activities when the explosion happened near a blacksmith’s workshop.
Eyewitness Muhammad Aliyu, who spoke to reporters, revealed he had narrowly escaped the blast. “I had just left the area when the explosion occurred, followed by a fire,” he said.
As of the latest updates, five bodies have been recovered, burned beyond recognition, and more than 50 people are receiving treatment at Talata Mafara General Hospital for injuries sustained in the explosion.
The Zamfara State Police Command has yet to comment on the incident.
