Heartbreak Turns Violent: Man arrested for brutal attack on woman who rejected his marriage proposal

The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 46-year-old man, Abi Baragon, for allegedly assaulting and inflicting serious injuries on a woman who rejected his marriage proposal in Port Harcourt.
Baragon, a father of four, was apprehended at the Nkpolu-Oroworukwo area of Mile 3, Port Harcourt, following a viral video that showed the victim crying for help after being attacked. The suspect reportedly fled the scene immediately after the assault.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday.

According to her, operatives from the Human Rights Department of the State Police Headquarters tracked down the suspect using intelligence-led policing and technical surveillance tools.
“A viral video circulated on social media on June 20, 2025, showing a lady raising an alarm after being assaulted by a man who later fled. The case has been under investigation since then,” Iringe-Koko said.

She explained that Baragon was eventually arrested on October 13, 2025, and although he initially denied the allegations, he later confessed to the crime.
“During interrogation, the suspect voluntarily admitted to attacking the victim with bottles, stabbing her in the process. His motive, according to his confession, stemmed from anger after the woman rejected his marriage advances upon discovering he was already married with four children,” she added.
The police spokesperson said the victim was receiving medical treatment, while investigations were ongoing to uncover all circumstances surrounding the assault.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, commended the operatives for their swift action and praised members of the public for providing credible information that led to the suspect’s arrest.
Adepoju reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring justice, warning criminals that there would be no hiding place for offenders.
“If anyone commits a crime and runs away, the police will find you. The suspect will face prosecution at the end of our discreet investigation,” the CP stated.
