One killed, seven injured as IED explodes in Zamfara

A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) has killed one person and injured seven others following an explosion along the Anka–Bagega Road in Zamfara State.

The blast occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when the explosive device detonated near a commercial Golf-3 Wagon transporting passengers from Bagega village to Anka town.

A resident of Bagega, identified as Mallam Abdul, said the vehicle was travelling along the route when the explosion occurred, causing casualties among the passengers.

According to him, one passenger died instantly at the scene, while seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

“The occupants of the vehicle were travelling from Bagega to Anka when the device exploded. One passenger was killed on the spot, while seven others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment,” he said.

The latest attack comes less than a month after another explosion along the same route reportedly claimed six lives, heightening concerns over the growing security threats facing communities in the area.

Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Zamfara State, Ahmad Muhammad Bello, said security personnel had been deployed to the scene to secure the area and assess the situation.

He disclosed that the police, working alongside military personnel, had dispatched specialised tactical teams to clear the affected road and restore normal movement along the route.

“The command has deployed specialised tactical teams to the scene, working closely with the military to assess the situation, clear the hazardous road and ensure the immediate restoration of peace and normalcy along the route,” he said.

The police commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of security agencies to tackling banditry and terrorism across the state, urging residents to support ongoing operations by providing timely and credible intelligence.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing to determine those responsible for planting the explosive device, while security operatives continue efforts to prevent further attacks in the area.
