Kano police arrest 9 suspects for child trafficking

The Kano State Police Command has apprehended nine individuals involved in interstate trafficking, abduction, and the buying and selling of minors.

The state Commissioner of Police, Usaini Gumel, made this known during the parade of the suspects at the Bompai command’s headquarters on Thursday.

Gumel stated that the suspects were captured following numerous intelligence-led operations, which exposed and dismantled the long-standing network of interstate trafficking syndicates operating across Kano, Bauchi, Gombe, Lagos, Delta, Anambra, and Imo states.

As a result of these operations, seven, mostly minor victims were rescued from the suspects.

The commissioner emphasised the significant impact of the diligent investigations conducted by the police, highlighting that the identified criminal networks had been in operation for over a decade.

He revealed that the rescued children, aged between three and eight, had been sold for prices ranging from N300,000 to N600,000, depending on their ages.

Gumel further disclosed that one of the victims, Mohammed Iliya, who was initially abducted from Bauchi and renamed Chidebere, was recently sold in Nnewi, Anambra State.

He affirmed the commitment of the command to collaborate with the state government to ensure the safe return and reunion of the abducted children with their original families.

The commissioner assured the public of more efforts undertaken by the command under his supervision to implement stringent security measures aimed at eradicating such crimes.
