Kebbi NLC protest over minimum wage bill

Story from Haruna USMAN, Kebbi

The Kebbi state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) under the leadership of Comrade Umar Halidu Alhassan, on Wednesday, staged a peaceful protest in Birnin Kebbi.

The protest which started from the Labour House got to the State Assembly complex and was attended by all the NLC affliates in the state.

Presenting three key demands of the union before a cross section of honourable members of the state assembly, Comrade Halidu said the protest is over a move by the federal legislative arm to remove the National minimum wage from the exclusive list to concurrent list, despite the fact that about 20 states in the federation are yet to implement the 30,000 minimum wage.

The union also called for the establishment of state’s judicial council which, according to him, will give justice to who deserves it without political influence. It also demanded that the state assembly ensure major oil marketers in the state that jerked up the price unofficially selling a litre at N180 and hoarding it are forced to make it available and revert to the old price.

Responding on behalf of the Speaker who was not on ground to receive the protesters, the Deputy Speaker Kebbi State House of Assembly, Honourable Muhammad Bugari Alieru thanked the unions for their peaceful conduct. Alieru assured the protesters that, the bill must get the nod of all the state assemblies before it can become a law. He promised to do justice to it by involving the NLC during the public hearing and whatever the union agreed upon, so it shall be. “We will meet all your demands as presented,” he assured them.
