Kidnappers release Katsina couple, daughter after ₦50m ransom

A couple and their young daughter abducted in Katsina State last month have been released after their family allegedly paid ₦50 million ransom to secure their freedom.

The victims, 33-year-old Anas Ahmadu, his wife, Halimatu, and their daughter, Jidda, were taken from their residence at Filin Canada Estate, Katsina metropolis, on August 26. A 25-year-old vigilante, Abdullahi, was shot dead during the attack.

Sources close to the family said the kidnappers initially demanded ₦600 million but later accepted ₦50 million after several negotiations. The hostages were freed late Thursday.

Police had earlier confirmed the abduction and said personnel were deployed to track the suspects, though the command has not yet commented on the victims’ release.

Family sources suggested the kidnappers may have targeted Halimatu because of her wealthy father, while some residents alleged that insider information may have aided the abduction.

The incident has renewed concerns about the role of informants in worsening insecurity across Katsina and other parts of the North West.
