KMT commissions community bridge in Rugar Fulani, Potiskum (Pictures)

On Friday morning, hundreds of residents from Rugar Fulani, a community in Potiskum, Yobe State, gathered to witness the official commissioning of a newly constructed bridge built by philanthropist Kashim Musa Tumsa (KMT).
The bridge was built to ease movement for the community, which has long struggled with poor access due to seasonal flooding.
Speaking during the event, the head of the bridge construction project, Malam Hassan B. Joda, began by expressing gratitude to God for the successful completion of the bridge.
He praised the sponsor, Alhaji Kashim Musa Tumsa, describing him as a man with a long-standing passion for community service. According to him, KMT has been involved in such humanitarian projects for over 20 years.

Joda explained that it was after Dr Hassan Gimba brought the plight of the Rugar Fulani community to KMT’s attention via social media that action was taken.
He said Gimba highlighted how residents, including schoolchildren, were forced to cross a makeshift wooden bridge daily to reach their destinations, particularly a school within the community.
”Each time it rained, the makeshift wooden bridge would collapse or get swept away, leaving the children unable to go to school. There have also been cases of lives lost due to the collapse of the bridge.

Although several politicians made promises to replace the structure, none fulfilled them. Then KMT came in, and within three weeks, the project was completed,” Joda said.
Motivated by the plight of the schoolchildren and the heavy daily use by residents, KMT took it upon himself to construct a durable bridge. The new bridge now connects the Rugar Fulani community to the neighbouring Dubai area, located behind GGSTC Potiskum.
The commissioning ceremony was symbolically conducted by a female student from the community, alongside the local ward head and Malam Hassan Joda. Residents, including men, women, and youth, turned out in large numbers, celebrating the gesture and praying for KMT.

The local ward head, Malam Saleh Garba, expressed immense gratitude and joy over the project. He humorously noted that he was formerly known as “the ward head of the wooden bridge,” but now, with the new structure in place, he expects to be called “the ward head of the KMT bridge.”
