Army launches military police probe into fatal shooting of teenager in Akwa Ibom

The Nigerian Army has initiated a full investigation into the killing of a 13-year-old boy, allegedly shot by a soldier in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of January 1, 2026, along Akongntekong Road in Ete community, sparking widespread outrage and tension among residents.

Confirming the development, the Army Public Relations Officer of 2 Brigade, Mbiokporo, Captain Lawal Mohamed, said the case has been handed over to the Military Police for thorough investigation. He assured that due process would be strictly followed in handling the matter.

Eyewitnesses said the victim, Timothy Daniel, was returning from a crossover service at Mount Zion Full Gospel Church with his 15-year-old sister, Miracle Daniel, when the incident happened at about 12:05 a.m.

According to an eyewitness, Anthony Akpan, Miracle had crossed the road briefly when the soldier, who was on guard duty at the residence of the late former clan head, Clement Idemudo—where expatriates are reportedly housed—allegedly followed her and made inappropriate advances. Akpan claimed that when the girl resisted and protested, the soldier became aggressive and threatened her.

Timothy, who was nearby, reportedly intervened to defend his sister, leading to a heated confrontation with the soldier. The situation allegedly escalated, with the soldier firing his rifle and hitting the teenager.

The boy was said to have died instantly, after which the soldier reportedly withdrew into the compound. Other security personnel later arrived at the scene and removed the body.

The shooting reportedly caused panic and unrest in the community, disrupting New Year celebrations. During the ensuing commotion, a vehicle belonging to a former political adviser to the Ikot Abasi Local Government Chairman, Obong Uyai Udoiwod, was damaged.

Residents have since called for justice, while the Army maintains that investigations are ongoing.
