Lazio boss Sarri undergoes successful heart procedure
Lazio head coach Maurizio Sarri has undergone a minor heart procedure after being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, a condition that disrupts the heart’s normal rhythm.
According to a report by BBC Sport on Tuesday, the 66-year-old’s operation was routine, and the Serie A club expects him to return to work within a few days.
In a statement posted on the club’s official X account, Lazio confirmed that Sarri underwent a transcatheter ablation procedure using pulsed field ablation (PFA) technology at the Policlinico Tor Vergata hospital.
“S.S. Lazio announced that head coach Maurizio Sarri, following the detection of atrial fibrillation, underwent a transcatheter ablation procedure using PFA technology,” the statement read. “The operation was successfully carried out by Professor Andrea Natale, an internationally recognised pioneer with over 30 years of experience in treating this condition.”
The club added that the procedure was attended by Lazio’s team doctor, Dr Italo Leo, and that Sarri is expected to resume his normal duties in the coming days.

Sarri was reappointed as Lazio manager in June 2025 and is currently guiding the club through the Serie A season, with the Rome side sitting eighth on the table after recording six wins from 17 league matches. Lazio are scheduled to host Napoli on Sunday in a fixture set to kick off at 11:30 GMT.
The veteran coach boasts an extensive managerial career. He began coaching in Italy’s lower divisions while working as a banker, before committing fully to football in the early 2000s.
Sarri rose to national prominence after leading Empoli to promotion to Serie A in the 2013–14 season and later guiding Napoli to two second-place finishes in three campaigns. His achievements earned him a move to Chelsea in 2018, where he won the Europa League and reached the Carabao Cup final during his only season in England.
He returned to Italy in 2019, winning the Serie A title with Juventus in the 2019–20 season, before first taking charge of Lazio in 2021. Sarri led the club to a second-place finish in the 2022–23 campaign before stepping down in March 2024.

Lazio have expressed confidence that Sarri will make a swift recovery and soon return to the touchline.
