Livestock Production: 450,000 herds of cattle, others vaccinated in Yobe

Story from Sa’adatu MAINA, Damaturu

Yobe State Government through the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources has vaccinated over 450,000 herds of cattle, sheep and goats in the state.

The state Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr Mairo Ahmed Amshi, revealed this Saturday while briefing newsmen on some of the achievements recorded by the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni in the state.

Dr Amshi said the ministry in the period under review, has witnessed serious challenges due to the global economic meltdown as a result of the pandemic caused by the outbreak of Corona Virus, internal and regional conflicts.

The commissioner noted that “this scenario has greatly affected the fortunes of the state government which makes it difficult to fully actualise some set goals for the good of the state, but despite these challenges, the Agric Ministry has recorded modest achievement.”

Amshi explained that the animal vaccination exercise is still ongoing and the ministry is expecting more animals to be vaccinated.

“To further support livestock production in the state, Yobe has 135 veterinary surgeons and 47 animal scientists with five equipped veterinary clinics, one each in a zonal office as well as 17 Area Veterinary/Livestock offices across the state.

“In the year 2021, Yobe state has come up with an Agricultural policy which supports both livestock and other agricultural sectors.

“This could be one of the reasons the federal government through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) collaborated with Yobe State and set up three Livestock Development Centres (LDC), one each in a senatorial zone of the state”, said the Commissioner.
