Long hours of fasting leading cause of kidney failures in Nigeria – NAFDAC

The Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, has warned against prolonged fasting as she revealed that it is a leading cause of kidney problems in the country.

Professor Adeyeye said this in Abuja while briefing the media on NAFDAC’s breakthrough in tracking high consignments of Tramadol and other pharmaceuticals to the Republic of Benin, Vanguard reports.

She said long hours of fasting by some religious worshippers have the tendency of causing kidney problems and called for moderation to maintain a healthy life.

The NAFDAC DG acknowledged Nigeria as a very religious country, where both Muslims and Christians tend to fast a lot, thereby unconsciously increasing the risk of Kidney failure.

“Your body has to have homeostatic balance, meaning that the water level in your body must be enough to make your organs function.

“Some people will fast for 10 or 20 days and drink only a little water, the kidney is being punished. Now, if you put chemicals in it, it triples in an exponential manner, it damages the kidney because the kidney doesn’t have water to dilute and filter,” she said.

Adeyeye, who tasked Nigerians to fast but with common sense, added:  “I fast but with common sense. We have to fast with common sense, otherwise, we will pay with our kidneys.”

  1. We all fast with common sense. As a Muslim the common sense here is to abide the laws of Allah and fast for the days and hours he instructed for as long as you are fit and healthy. The logic is beyond science both belief. God said in Qur’an ” Does he who created not know? He is the subtle most acquainted” Mulk 14.
He also said regarding fasting “Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship”al baqara 185. He also said “Allah does not charge a soul except (with that within) it’s capacity” Al baqarah 286.
With the above I strongly believe that fasting can only make one healthier not I’ll if done with good intention and within the stipulated hours( from down to dusk). He who feel exhausted sincerely most discontinue otherwise he is offending God not obeying.
