Lucky Aiyedatiwa sworn-in as Ondo Governor following Akeredolu’s demise

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by various judges, top government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, members of the state cabinet, the State All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman, and members of the State House of Assembly.

This significant development follows the unfortunate death of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu earlier on the same day. Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s ascension to the governorship marked the culmination of a year-long journey, shaped by health challenges faced by Governor Akeredolu.

Aiyedatiwa had weathered an impeachment plot by Akeredolu’s allies in the Ondo State House of Assembly and opposition from his late principal’s supporters. The political landscape of the state was marred by controversy, with activists and constitutional lawyers advocating for Akeredolu to transmit power to Aiyedatiwa in accordance with the 1999 Constitution.

Governor Akeredolu, who was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer abroad, eventually transmitted power to Aiyedatiwa on December 13, 2023, before his demise on December 27, 2023. The 67-year-old governor, serving his second term, succumbed to complications arising from prostate cancer, leaving a void that Aiyedatiwa is now poised to fill as the new leader of Ondo State.
