A 24-year-old man, Francis Ikpor, has allegedly defiled a girl named Favour, a 10-year-old orphan and primary four pupil in Akpoha community, Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The victim, who lives with her 60-year-old grandmother, Orie Enya, has refused to return to school after being defiled on her way from school by the suspect.
It was gathered that Favour was allegedly defiled while looking for where to fetch drinking water for her younger brother.
The grandmother said it took God’s intervention to discover the defilement of the girl.
According to her, the defilement has been reported to a non-governmental organisation, Mother and Child Development Forum.
Flora Egwu, director of the organisation handling the matter, frowned at the development.
Egwu, who is the Gender Desk Officer of National Obstetrics Fistula Centre (NOFIC), Abakaliki, said the victim’s grandmother, who noticed changes in the girl’s behaviour even after flogging her, only got to know about the defilement when she noticed bloodstains on her private part as she bent down at the kitchen to make fire.
She decried the non-availability of the state’s safe house for victims of molestation, victims’ relatives collecting money from suspects to end the cases without court trials are some problems encountered while adjudicating for minors and women.
