Maria Bartomeu officially resigns as Barcelona president

Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu has resigned.

His resignation comes less than 24 hours before Barcelona is due to face Seria A giants Juventus.

The Blaugrana squad is already in Turin with coach Ronald Koeman, so the news comes a day before a huge Champions League fixture.

Sport, Mundo Deportivo, Cadena Ser, and others all claim Bartomeu and his Board of Directors have resigned.

They were facing a vote of no confidence and Bartomeu had spoken out against the idea of resignation only yesterday.

It’s not clear what happened over the last 24 hours to prompt the change of tune, but it plunges the Catalan club into turmoil.

Bartomeu’s position has been in doubt since his bitter public row with Lionel Messi over the summer, refusing to let the Argentine leave.
