Meet Prof. Umma Abdullahi: Northern Nigeria’s 1st female professor of mechanical engineering
History has been made at Bayero University, Kano (BUK), as Dr. Umma Abdullahi has been promoted to the rank of Professor of Mechanical Engineering, becoming the first female professor of the discipline in northern Nigeria.
The university’s Appointments and Promotions Committee (A&PC) approved the promotion on December 27, 2024, with the rank taking effect from October 1, 2023. This groundbreaking achievement was announced by Dr. Hadiza Ibrahim, a senior lecturer in the Mass Communication Department of BUK, via a verified Facebook post.
Prof. Umma Abdullahi now joins an exclusive list of women in mechanical engineering, becoming only the third female professor of the discipline in Nigeria. Her achievement is a testament to her dedication, resilience, and exceptional contributions to engineering education and research.
Prof. Umma began her career as a lecturer at Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil, where she served from 2007 to 2017. She later moved to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where she taught from 2017 to 2022. Currently, she is a faculty member at Bayero University, Kano, where she has continued to inspire the next generation of engineers.
Her promotion is not only a personal milestone but also a significant step toward breaking gender barriers in the male-dominated field of engineering. It serves as an inspiration for young women across Nigeria and beyond, encouraging them to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
