NCC targets Starlink for unapproved price increase in Nigeria

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is preparing to take enforcement actions against Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, Starlink, for raising subscription prices without prior approval.

This announcement was made by Reuben Muoka, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, on Tuesday.

Starlink recently notified its customers of a dramatic 97% increase in its monthly subscription fee, raising it from N38,000 to N75,000 for both existing and new users. The price of the Starlink installation kit has also risen by 34%, now costing N590,000, up from N440,000.

Muoka stated that the NCC was surprised by Starlink’s unilateral decision, noting that the company had previously submitted a request for a price adjustment that had not been approved. He emphasized that this action violates Sections 108 and 111 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003, as well as the terms of Starlink’s license concerning tariffs.

“The commission will take appropriate enforcement measures against any actions by a licensee that threaten the regulatory stability of the telecommunications industry,” Muoka stated.

Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) grants the NCC the authority to regulate telecom tariffs, stipulating that no licensee can set service charges without prior approval. Additionally, Section 111 empowers the NCC to impose financial penalties on any licensee that exceeds approved tariffs, ensuring adherence to regulations within the sector.

As the situation develops, the NCC’s response is expected to influence the regulatory framework for telecommunications in Nigeria.
