NCS collaborates with National Sports Commission to enhance sports in Nigeria (Pictures)
In a bid to elevate Nigeria’s sports landscape, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has partnered with the National Sports Commission (NSC) to host the African Volleyball Inter-Club Women’s Championship, set to take place in April 2025 in Abuja.
This collaboration signals a major step forward in Nigeria’s sporting revival, focusing on boosting youth engagement and enhancing the nation’s global sports profile.
During a courtesy visit to the NSC Chairman, Shehu Dikko, on Monday, 27 January 2025, Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, outlined the NCS’s vision of using sports as a catalyst for national unity, youth empowerment, and pride.
Adeniyi emphasized that the championship, set for 1 to 14 April, would showcase the continent’s top volleyball teams and help place Nigeria at the forefront of African sports.
Adeniyi commended the leadership of the National Sports Commission, noting that for the first time in years, the country is witnessing a wave of professionalism in sports development.
“We are confident that the glory days of Nigerian sports are back, and this championship will serve as a testament to that revival,” he remarked.
The NCS, in collaboration with the Nigerian Volleyball Federation, was granted the hosting rights by the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) to organise the championship, marking a significant milestone for both the Customs Service and Nigeria’s sports community.
The event is expected to not only attract top-level competition but also provide a platform for showcasing Nigeria’s organisational and sportsmanship abilities.

In his response, Shehu Dikko expressed his full support for the initiative, calling the partnership with the NCS a key moment in Nigeria’s sporting journey.
“This championship is not just an opportunity to showcase our athletes but also to inspire young Nigerians and demonstrate our organizational capabilities on the global stage,” Dikko said.
He also pledged the NSC’s assistance, including access to top facilities, technical expertise, and logistical support, ensuring the tournament sets a high standard for future international events in the country.
Further supporting the initiative, Engr. Habu Gumel, President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, commended CGC Adeniyi’s leadership and vision. He praised the integration of sports into the Customs Service culture and reaffirmed the NOC’s commitment to making the championship a success.
“We must be intentional in our preparations to ensure this event becomes a springboard for more international competitions in Nigeria,” Gumel said, further bolstering the efforts to establish the country as a premier host for future sporting events.
