NECO indicts 93 schools for cheating, blacklists 52 supervisors
The National Examinations Council (NECO) has recently published the results of the 2023 Internal Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination.
It has been reported that an impressive 61.60 percent of candidates achieved five credits and above, including English and Mathematics.
However, the council also revealed that 93 schools were implicated in whole-school cheating practices, while 52 supervisors were recommended for blacklisting due to inadequate supervision and involvement in assisting and encouraging malpractice during the exams.

During the announcement of the examination results, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of NECO, shared this information. He stated that the affected schools would be summoned by the council for discussions, following which appropriate sanctions would be imposed.
A total of 1,196,985 candidates took part in the exams, consisting of 616,398 males and 580,587 females. Additionally, 1,543 candidates with special needs, including those with hearing or visual impairments, albinism, autism, low vision, and adermatoglyphic conditions (absence of fingerprints), also participated.
Wushishi further noted, “Out of the candidates, 737,308, representing 61.60 percent, passed with five credits and above. Furthermore, 1,013,611 candidates, which amounts to 84.68 percent, achieved five credits, regardless of English and Mathematics.”
Regarding the schools involved in malpractice, he declared, “In line with our commitment to identify and punish offending schools and supervisors, 93 schools were found to have engaged in whole-school cheating. These schools will be invited for discussions with the council, following which appropriate measures will be taken. Similarly, 52 supervisors have been recommended for blacklisting due to their poor supervision and involvement in aiding malpractice during the examination.”
In conclusion, Prof. Wushishi officially released the results to the public and informed candidates that they can access their individual results on the NECO website, www.neco.gov.ng, using their examination registration numbers.
