NGO tasks legislators on consultative representation

A Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) known as ‘Young Leaders Network’ (YLN) has charged legistlators in the country to always consult their constituents in their representation and legistlation.
Programme Manager of the NGO Moses Danjuma gave the charge during a meeting tagged ‘Citizens and Legistlators Forum’ organised by the NGO for political party leaders, youth and women groups, community leaders and local governments councillors in Bauchi.
He said the project tagged ‘Strenthening Youth Participation in Northern Nigeria Project’ which was funded by the United States of America’s National Endowment for Democracy (NED), Washington DC was meant to make the elected legistlators at the local government level to give accounts of their representation to the constituents within the period under review and also give the electorates opportunity to inform the councillors about their yearnings and aspirations.

According to him, if elected legistlators and leaders would consult their electorates before carrying out their activities, government programmes will have better impacts on the citizens.
“The elected leaders invited are councillors from various wards. The forum was basically meant for legistlators. But looking at the fact that we are working for people at the grassroot, we decided to invite the local government legistlators who are councillors”. He said.
Also speaking, chairman of the council of local governments councillors of Bauchi state Honourable Musa Ibrahim Zango lauded the YLN for organising the meeting saying it gave them the opportunity to present their scorecards and get feedback from the electorates.
He asked the NGO to organise more of such fora periodically saying getting inputs from their constituents would enable them give better representation adding that they cannot know all the needs of the electorates except in meeting like that.
In his remarks, a participant at the forum and chairman People’s Redemption Party (PRP) in Bauchi Local Government Abdulmalik M. Aliyu suggested that after elections periods, parties and citizens should set aside differences and guide elected leaders on what they want.
