Nigeria launches bone marrow transplant programme to combat sickle cell disease

In a groundbreaking move for healthcare in Nigeria, the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and the Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria (SCFN) have launched a high-quality bone marrow transplant programme aimed at treating sickle cell disease. This initiative, which meets international standards, offers hope to thousands of Nigerians suffering from this debilitating condition.
Sickle cell disease is a major health crisis in Nigeria, where it affects millions, leading to severe complications and significantly reduced life expectancy. According to Dr. Annette Akinsete, CEO of SCFN, “The establishment of this programme is a pivotal moment in our fight against sickle cell disease. For too long, families have had to seek treatment abroad due to lack of local options. Now, they can receive world-class care right here in Nigeria.”
Historically, patients with severe sickle cell disease have faced challenges accessing bone marrow transplants, which are often cost-prohibitive and logistically complex. However, LUTH and SCFN have worked tirelessly to bridge this gap. The programme began with a post-transplant clinic in 2019, which provided care for patients who had previously undergone transplants overseas. This effort laid the groundwork for the establishment of a fully operational transplant programme, complete with a Stem Cell Processing Laboratory—the first of its kind in West Africa.

“The complexity of bone marrow transplants necessitates a multidisciplinary approach,” explained Dr. Seye Akinsete, the programme’s team lead. “Our team comprises paediatric and adult haematologists, nurses, pharmacists, and social workers, all committed to providing comprehensive care before, during, and after the transplant.”
The first set of patients began their transplant process in late August 2024, undergoing rigorous preparation involving blood transfusions and chemotherapy. On September 17 and 19, these patients received bone marrow stem cells from family donors. “This is a significant milestone for us,” said Prof. W. L. Adeyemo, Chief Medical Director of LUTH. “We are proud to offer this life-saving treatment locally, and we are committed to ensuring that our patients receive the best possible care.”
The programme has garnered support from various stakeholders, including the Lagos State Government and the Federal Ministry of Health. Prof. Olu Akinyanju, the founder of SCFN, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This programme not only provides hope for individuals affected by sickle cell disease but also strengthens our healthcare system as a whole.”
As the first patients receive treatment, both LUTH and SCFN express gratitude to everyone involved in making this programme a reality. “We are excited to be part of this transformative journey,” Dr. Akinsete remarked. “With the right support and commitment, we can change the narrative for sickle cell disease in Nigeria.”
