Nigerian military trails terrorists in Borno, kills 28, recovers arms

In a counter-attack on insurgency, troops of the 82 Division Task Force Battalion on patrol along Ngoshe – Ashigashiya on Sunday made contact with elements of Boko Haram terrorists at Daushe, Northeast Borno State, where they killed 28 of the insurgents.

This information was revealed in a communiqué by the director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General, Onyema Nwachukwu.

General Nwachukwu said the troops, who fiercely engaged and sustained heavy gunfire on the terrorists during the encounter, killed five terrorists, compelling fighters of the terrorist group to retreat in disarray into the Mandara Mountains with several gunshot wounds.

This now brings the total to 103 terrorists killed in three days, with at least 73 Boko Haram and ISWAP dead in various proactive operations launched by the army in the northeast.

The army spokesman said the operation took place early on Saturday, June 3, between Jakana and Auno along the Damaturu-Maiduguri highway in the embattled Borno state. Three trucks and arms were recovered from the ISWAP fighters, as well as an AK 47 Rifle, one Magazine containing 13 rounds of fabricated 7.62mm (Special), a bandolier of 44 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO), and a bag containing 52 rounds of 7.62mm (Special).

“Other items recovered were blankets, foodstuffs, vehicles, generators, IED materials and religious scripts,” he said.

Nwachukwu said “During air operations, the spiritual base and training camps of the terrorists in the northeast part of Borno State and the fringes of Lake Chad were destroyed by air bombardments.

“These came on the heels of a credible intelligence report which revealed that some top Iswap/BHT commanders were holding a meeting at the said locations.

“Consequently, the air component mobilised with force packages of NAF platforms and launched attacks on the locations.”

In a similar operation, troops of 212 Battalion on 1 July 2021 carried out clearance operations on marauding Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) along Gadayi – Kareto – Gubio axis, Magumeri, Tungushe villages, and the general area of Kerenoa.

During the offensive, troops recovered one AK 47 Rifle and one Baufeng communication Radio set abandoned by the fleeing BHTs.

Following the attack on the terrorists, reinforcement by troops of Sector 1 and 2, gave the fleeing terrorists a hot pursuit with close air support from the Nigerian Air Force Component of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK).

As a result of the encounter, six terrorists were neutralised, three AK 47 rifles and one rocket-propelled grenade captured, while one Gun truck was destroyed. Two other gun trucks that were abandoned by the terrorists were also recovered.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Major General Faruk Yahaya called on members of the general public to give the military maximum support and cooperation in order to achieve great success in the fight against terrorism in the nation. He also commended the tremendous effort made by the Land troops and the Air component of OPHK in neutralising the terrorists and recovering the arms. He further charged them to put in more work and never relent in the progress made so far.
