NPF summons police officers for escorting university students’ Exco

Story from Hamzat Ibrahim ABAGA

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has swiftly responded to a viral video showing two armed police officers escorting the president of the Adamawa State University students’ union.

The video, which circulated on social media, depicted the officers walking alongside the union president’s car while receiving cheers from students.

In light of this incident, the NPF has issued a statement strongly condemning the actions of the officers, declaring them unacceptable and contradictory to the values upheld by the Force. These officers, hailing from the Jimeta command, were deployed with the intent to maintain order during the union’s convention in the state. However, their conduct deviated from the expected professional standards.

Consequently, both the involved officers and their superiors have been summoned to the force headquarters to face appropriate action and disciplinary measures.

The NPF clarified that the officers were assigned to ensure peace and security during the convention organized by the National Union of Adamawa State Students (NUADSS) on September 4th and 5th, 2023.

In a statement “Following a recent incident involving two Constables escorting a Student Union president in Adamawa State, their actions were unacceptable and do not represent the values of our Force,” the statement reads.

“The officers, who are attached to Jimeta Divisional Police Command, along with their superiors, have been summoned to the Force Headquarters for appropriate action.

“It’s important to note that they were deployed to maintain peace and security during the convention and electoral process organized by the National Union of Adamawa State Students (NUADSS) on 4th and 5th of September, 2023.

“However their actions were not in line with the purpose for which they were deployed. They have both been referred to the Force Provost for further disciplinary actions.

“We are committed to maintaining professionalism and upholding the dignity of the Nigeria Police Force.”
