NYSC to prosecute 54 fake UNICAL graduates
In a continued effort to curb fraudulent practices in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation process, the NYSC has announced the prosecution of 54 corps members who were illegally mobilised by the University of Calabar (UNICAL).
This move comes in addition to the earlier invalidation of 101 certificates, bringing the total number of voided certificates to 178.
Brigadier General YD Ahmed, the NYSC Director General, disclosed the development during a press briefing in Abuja on Saturday.
He stated, “We have identified and demobilised 54 corps members who were fraudulently mobilised by UNICAL. These individuals will now face legal prosecution.”
General Ahmed further explained that 19 additional individuals who had registered online for mobilisation have also been prevented from service.
“Moreover, four Certificates of National Service for other culprits were not produced by the scheme,” he added.
The NYSC Director General praised the Vice-Chancellor of UNICAL, Professor Florence Obi, for her proactive role in addressing the issue.
“The Vice-Chancellor of UNICAL, Professor Florence Obi, came forward to report discrepancies she observed in the graduation list. Her forthrightness led to the invalidation of the fraudulent certificates.
I commend her for her integrity,” General Ahmed said.

He highlighted the importance of accurate data entry and the need for integrity in the mobilisation process.
“There have been instances where individuals with no legitimate qualifications were included in graduation lists.
This undermines the credibility of the NYSC programme,” General Ahmed noted.
“We will intensify our collaboration with Heads of Corps Producing Institutions and relevant stakeholders to prevent such occurrences in the future.”
General Ahmed also urged employers to be diligent in verifying the authenticity of NYSC certificates presented by job seekers.
“Employers should verify the certificates of national service before hiring. Any lapse in the mobilisation process reflects poorly on the institution involved,” he advised.
