Pharmaceutical company in Gombe donates 500 helmets to ‘Okada riders’

Story from Abubakar RABILU, Gombe

A pharmaceutical company that produces Boska, Dexa, has donated helmets to 500 motorcycle riders, popularly called Okada, in Gombe State.

The company said the essence of the donation is to provide protection and safety of lives in the event of an accident.

The Commissioner for Internal Security and Ethical Orientation in Gombe State, Leuternal Abdullahi Bello (Rtd), commended the Boska makers for the thoughtful gesture of giving out such number of helmets to the ‘Okada’ riders.

The commissioner said their effort aimed to protect people’s lives as they have been partners in progress in terms of revenue generation to the government.

He promised to extend a goodwill message to the governor.

He commended their zeal, being a company that came from afar, to donate helmets to thousands of the commercial motorcycle riders in Gombe State.

In his response, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Gombe State, Mr Felix Theman, said the importance of helmets cannot be over emphasized, as it holds great importance to Okada riders to wear inorder to ensure safety on the highway.

Theman commended the Boska Company for their support, adding that such wonderful donations always assist them in their campaign for wearing helmets.

He called on the Okada riders to drive safely and use the helmets accordingly, adding that wearing helmets will reduce the number of deaths when accidents occur.

Mr Tony Amadi, the Digital Marketing Manager of the company, said they had given out helmets to the Okadas riders in an effort to protect their lives.

Additionally, he said they intend to make more donations when the simulation calls for it.

He said the company had made similar donations to 600 Okada riders in Sokoto State because helmets are very important while driving.

Even though the enforcement of helmet use is not strictly observed in Gombe, some of the Okada riders who spoke on behalf of other beneficiaries expressed their happiness.

A beneficiary said the helmet will be useful to them, and urged other well meaning organisations to emulate Dexa in its quest to safeguard human life.
