Story from Kenneth AFOR, Lagos

Not more than 44 persons have been arrested by the Ugandan police for attending a gay traditional marriage.

Those arrested were 38 males and six females.

In a statement issued by Luke Owoyesigyire, the spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, on Monday, the suspects were arrested in the Ugandan town of Nansana.

According to Owoyesigyire, the police received a tip-off about a group of men suspected to be homosexuals conducting a wedding in 780 zones, Ochen ward in Nansana municipal.

“A team of police officers was immediately sent to the venue and a group of adults, 38 males and 6 females were found conducting a ceremony at about 1 pm that appeared to be a wedding. All the men had made up and some were dressed in female dresses and wigs.

“At the same functions gifts were recovered, these included suitcases, TV, Assorted gifts like sugar, salt, pineapples and many other gifts usually given at traditional functions.” the statement read.

The Kampala police spokesperson also stated that used and unused condoms were recovered at the scene, adding that the suspects did not observe the COVID-19 protocols such as social distancing and wearing of nose masks.

He noted that they were arrested and detained at the police station.

Charles Twine, the Criminal Investigations Divisions spokesperson, later said the group would be charged for engaging themselves in a negligent act likely to spread an infectious disease.

Homosexuality is a crime in Uganda, just like many other African countries, Nigeria inclusive and is punishable under the law.
