Police arrest young couple for faking own kidnap to collect ransom from parents
Two individuals have been arrested by the Delta State Police for faking their kidnap to extort money from the lady’s parents. The lady, who orchestrated the crime, successfully collected two million naira from her parents.
The couple, consisting of the lady and her boyfriend, were apprehended in Adaba following an intelligence-led operation by the police.
Confirming the arrest, the State Police PRO, SP Bright Edafe, explained to journalists on Wednesday, January 8, that the duo was arrested after a thorough investigation by the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber-Crime Squad led by CSP Labe Joseph.
“The command received a complaint on January 2, 2025, from Mrs Oliko Joy, who reported that her daughter, Princess, had left home on December 30, 2024, and had not returned.

“The following day, the family received a call demanding a ransom of ₦2 million for her release. The Commissioner of Police immediately directed the Special Squad to ensure the victim’s safe rescue and arrest the suspect.
“The operatives conducted an intelligence-driven investigation, leading to the arrest of Prince Atigbi after the ransom was collected,” Edafe said.
Edafe further revealed that Atigbi confessed that he was not kidnapped, but had followed his girlfriend’s instructions to assist with the scam.
