Police in Borno recover unexploded explosives
The Nigeria Police Force has announced the recovery of several unexploded military ordnances in Maiduguri, Borno State, through the swift action of its Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit. This proactive measure has once again demonstrated the Force’s commitment to public safety in the insurgency-affected region.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the recovery operation was initiated after vigilant residents alerted the authorities to suspicious objects. The EOD-Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) team promptly deployed to the affected locations to secure the sites and neutralize any potential threats.
Among the recovered items were six unexploded projectiles and a mortar bomb discovered in the Dala Kacchallah area near an uncompleted building. The statement revealed that these items were likely washed ashore by recent floods and abandoned by scavengers who had initially handled them. Additionally, a military hand grenade was recovered at the Gwange Riverbank. The EOD-CBRN team successfully evacuated the explosives and conducted risk-awareness campaigns to educate the local community about the dangers of tampering with such devices.
“All ordnances have been safely removed, and the affected areas have been declared safe,” Adejobi said. He further assured residents that investigations are underway to trace the origin of the explosives and prevent future occurrences.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun lauded the professionalism and bravery of the EOD-CBRN officers. He praised their consistent efforts in averting disasters, especially in Borno State, a region that has seen frequent recovery of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and unexploded ordnances.
“The IGP also noted that the EOD team in Borno State has been consistent in responsiveness and professionalism, preventing a series of calamities as many IEDs have been safely recovered in many instances within the state,” Adejobi said.
The Police Force emphasized the importance of community collaboration in addressing security challenges. Residents were encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious objects or activities to authorities promptly.
