Political parties intensify preparations as May seadline for primaries approaches

Political parties across Nigeria are stepping up internal consultations and strategic meetings as they race to meet the statutory May deadline for the conduct of party primaries ahead of forthcoming elections.

The deadline, set in accordance with provisions of the Electoral Act and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), requires parties to conclude their primaries within the stipulated timeframe to enable the submission of candidates’ names.

Major parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), are reportedly fine-tuning modalities for delegate selection, screening of aspirants, and zoning arrangements.

Party insiders say the coming weeks will be decisive, as aspirants intensify consultations, mobilise support, and negotiate alliances within their respective political structures. Some parties are also grappling with internal disputes that could affect consensus-building efforts.

INEC has warned that failure to comply with the timeline may result in disqualification of candidates, urging parties to adhere strictly to the electoral calendar.

Political analysts note that the rush toward the deadline could reshape alliances and influence the balance of power ahead of the general elections, as contenders position themselves for party tickets in what is expected to be a fiercely contested race.
