Pope Leo XIV urges end to global conflicts in first Sunday blessing
In his first Sunday address since ascending to the papacy, Pope Leo XIV, on Sunday May 2025, in Vatican city, UK, delivered a heartfelt plea for global peace, calling for an end to the war in Ukraine and a ceasefire in Gaza.
Appearing once again on the central balcony of St Peter’s Basilica, the same spot where he was introduced to the world just days earlier, the new pontiff urged leaders and communities to pursue “authentic and lasting peace.”
Specifically, Pope Leo called for the release of all Israeli hostages and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. He also appealed for an end to the violence in Ukraine, expressing his hopes for peace in a region that has been devastated by prolonged conflict.

Drawing a powerful comparison, Pope Leo echoed the words of his predecessor, Pope Francis, lamenting the many ongoing wars across the globe as signs of “a third world war in pieces”
The message was met with applause and prayers from thousands gathered in St Peter’s Square, marking a solemn yet hopeful beginning to Pope Leo XIV’s papacy.
