Adams was admitted to Lyon Hospital for knee surgery in March 1982 but never regained consciousness after an error with his supply of anaesthetic.

On the day of Adams’ operation to repair a damaged tendon in his knee which he suffered while on a coaching training camp, many staff at the hospital in Lyon were on strike.

Between the anaesthetist and trainee, numerous errors were made, causing Adams to suffer a cardiac arrest and brain damage.

He was said to have been in great shape going into the operation and was expected to wake up after only a few hours, but remained in the coma for 39 years.

The late athlete was born in Dakar Senegal, played as a centre-back, made more than 140 appearances for Nice and also played for Paris St-Germain, 84 appearances for Nimes.

He played 22 times for the France national team from 1972 to 1976.

His wonderful wife, Bernadette had tended to him ever since he went into coma, barely missing a day’s care over the last three decades.
