Prices of beans shoot up while costs of other grains drop at Potiskum Market

Traders and buyers at the Potiskum grains market have witnessed mixed developments in the prices of food commodities over the weekend following a slight increase in the cost of beans while other staple grains recorded marginal decreases.
A market survey conducted on Sunday, 27th April, revealed that the price of white beans, both large and small varieties, as well as brown beans, saw a noticeable rise.
The large white beans now sell between ₦85,000 and ₦90,000 per bag, up from the previous range. Small white beans have climbed higher, ranging from ₦90,000 to ₦93,000, while brown beans are now priced between ₦90,000 and ₦95,000.

In contrast, the prices of grains such as millet, maize, and sorghum have slightly dropped. New millet currently sells for ₦50,000 to ₦51,000 per bag. Wedding maize, a special variety, is priced between ₦45,000 and ₦47,000.
Sorghum varieties also show reduced prices. Kaura sorghum is available for ₦40,000 to ₦41,000, white sorghum ranges from ₦44,000 to ₦46,000, while Wala sorghum (Wuyo) remains steady at ₦40,000.
Other notable items include tobacco seeds priced between ₦18,000 and ₦19,000, mixed sesame seeds at ₦60,000, and Gurguzu (a mix of grain waste) at ₦25,000. The cost of Gurguzu Zobo, made from roselle waste, was not available.
Additionally, Gangala (Gujjiya nuts) fetched a premium, with a bag going for ₦180,000, and Aƙwaro Ɗan Ngalda was priced at ₦21,000.
Traders attributed the increase in beans prices to high demand and dwindling supply, as the dry season harvest approaches.
Meanwhile, the slight drop in grain prices is said to be linked to improved local inflow and reduced bulk purchases from commercial buyers.
Residents, especially those preparing for the upcoming farming season, are watching the fluctuations closely as they plan their household and business budgets.
