Rivers Chief Judge rejects state assembly’s request to probe Gov. Fubara
The Chief Judge of Rivers State has declined the request by the Rivers State House of Assembly to initiate a formal investigation into Governor Siminalayi Fubara over alleged misconduct, sparking debates on judicial independence and the separation of powers within the state government.
In a formal response to the Assembly’s petition, the Chief Judge stated that the judiciary must remain impartial and independent, and that any probe into the governor’s conduct must follow due legal processes rather than legislative overreach. The judge emphasized that allegations against public officials should be addressed through established judicial channels, such as courts or anti-corruption agencies, rather than through political inquiries initiated by the legislature.
The Assembly had sought the probe following accusations and public outcry regarding alleged financial improprieties linked to Governor Fubara. Lawmakers argued that the probe was necessary to uphold transparency and accountability in governance. However, the Chief Judge pointed out that the Assembly’s role is primarily legislative and not investigative or judicial.

Critics, however, argue that rejecting the probe request could undermine efforts to hold public officials accountable and may fuel public distrust in government institutions.
