Senate passes Bill for Hadejia State creation

A bill to create Hadejia State from the current Jigawa State in the Northwest of Nigeria has successfully passed its first reading in the Senate.

The bill was presented as the third item on the Senate’s Order Paper on February 25, 2025.

Senator Abdulhamid Ahmed Mallam-Madori, representing Jigawa North, informed the Senate that the proposed Hadejia State would consist of eight local government councils currently under Jigawa State.

Having passed the first reading, the bill will now move to the Senate’s Constitution Review Committee, as creating new states requires an amendment to the 1999 Constitution. The committee will review the memorandum submitted by proponents of the new state.

The topic of creating new states has gained attention in Nigerian politics in recent years. Although new states have been infrequently created under civilian governments, it remains uncertain whether the current National Assembly will break the long-standing pattern.

Supporters of the creation of new states argue that it is essential to foster development in underrepresented regions, while opponents contend that it results in the creation of entities that may not be self-sufficient. It will be interesting to see whether the 10th National Assembly takes this step forward.
