Senator Bomai launches scholarship programme to uplift education in Yobe South

In a bold step to foster educational growth and human capital development, Senator Ibrahim Mohammed Bomai, representing Yobe South Senatorial District, has unveiled a comprehensive scholarship programme targeted at students from four key local government areas: Potiskum, Nangere, Fika, and Fune.
The screening, which started at the Federal College of Education, Potiskum on Saturday, is part of the implementation of the initiative.
The scholarship, which spans tertiary levels including Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees, is designed to raise academic standards and equip young people in the region with the knowledge and skills required to thrive in an evolving global economy.
Speaking on the vision behind the initiative, Professor Muhammad Munkaila of the University of Maiduguri, who chairs the scholarship committee, described the programme as a direct response to Senator Bomai’s longstanding commitment to the educational development of his constituents.

“Senator Bomai contacted me and expressed his desire to offer scholarships to students across Yobe South,” Prof. Munkaila explained. “He tasked us with designing a fair and transparent selection process, which we have done.”
He revealed that over 7,000 applicants have already submitted their forms, reflecting the high level of interest and the desperate need for educational support among young people in the region.
Munkaila added that the committee is currently undergoing a rigorous screening process to select the most deserving candidates.
Emphasising the integrity of the process, he assured that only students who meet the criteria will be awarded the scholarships.
“The entire process will be strictly merit-based,” he noted. “We are placing special emphasis on science and technology-related courses such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and other emerging disciplines. We want our students to be future-ready and globally competitive.”
In a similar vein, Alhaji Ibrahim Ibbiyo, Secretary of the Scholarship Committee, described the programme as “one of its kind” in Yobe South’s history, both in scope and in its focus on academic excellence.
“This scholarship is purely merit-based,” he reiterated. “We want to encourage hardworking students who are determined to excel in their academic pursuits. This is not just about giving money—it is about investing in the future of Yobe South.”
He further stressed that the initiative is part of Senator Bomai’s broader vision to build human capacity and reduce educational inequality in the region.
“The Senator has made it clear that education is the foundation of sustainable development. Through this scholarship, he is opening the door to opportunity for hundreds of young people who might otherwise be left behind.”
