“She wanted it” – 35-year-old man defends rape of 14-year-old girl

A 35-year-old man has beenI arrested in Lagos for allegedly luring and defiling a 14-year-old girl.

Newsmen gathered that the suspect, identified as Akeem Waheed, is being charged for defilement under the Criminal Laws of the state.

According to reports, the incident happened at Akewe Close, Opeloyeru in Alakuko area of Lagos, where the both the victim and suspect reside.

According to the police, the suspect allegedly lured the victim to his apartment using words of mouth to confuse her before he fondled her breasts.

He then engaged her in sex before the victim later regained her senses and alleged that he engaged her in the act without her consent.

The matter was reported to the police in the area and the suspect was arrested and transferred to the Gender Section of the State Police Command for interrogation.

During interrogation, the suspect was alleged to have admitted to have slept with her but with her consent, which the victim denied giving her consent.

However, the police found him culpable for the alleged offence because of the age of the victim and consequently charged him to court.

The charge read: “That you, Akeem Waheed ‘m’ on the 12th day of August, 2024, at about 2230hours at Akewe Close, Opeloyeru, Alakuko Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did defile the victim by forcefully having carnal knowledge of her and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 137 the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”

The court did not take his plea when he was arraigned following a motion moved by the prosecutor, Supol Akeem Raji, asking the court to refer the matter to the DPP for advice because of the nature of the alleged offence.

The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, ordered his remand in custody at the correctional centre Kirikiri, Lagos, without any option of bail pending the outcome of DPP’s legal advice.

The court also directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send it to the DPP for advice while the matter was adjourned till 3rd October, 2024, for the report of the DPP’s advice to be ready, which will determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
