Start from yourselves – Shehu Sani tells Govs asking Buhari to sack workers above 50

Former lawmaker who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the 8th Assembly of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Shehu Sani, has berated Nigerian governors who asked President Muhammadu Buhari to sack civil servants who are above 50 years of age.

According to an exclusive report done by Premium Times, governors had in a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, proposed that the federal government should sack civil servants who are above 50 years of age, raise taxes across board and levy anyone in the country earning N30,000 and above monthly.

Reacting to the governor’s proposals in a post on his Twitter page, the former lawmaker and President of the Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria (CRCN), Sani, said the implementation of the governors’ proposals should start from them as all of them are already above 50 years of age.

Senator Sani wrote: “The Governors want Buhari to sack civil servants that are over fifty years of age. They should have started from themselves since all of them are over fifty.”

The governors have come under fire following their proposal to the President, advising him to sack civil servants who are 50 years and above.

Reacting to the proposal, the National President of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), Tommy Okon, said irrespective of how the governors arrived at their proposal, they were the enemies of Nigeria’s economy.

“Look at their ages, those who want to be president of this country. When they have failed, they tie it to the workers. Is it workers that make the economy fail? We will reply to them appropriately, as I don’t want to be personal about it,” The Guardian had quoted Okon as saying.

Similarly, the General Secretary of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Emmanuel Ugboaja, described the proposal as a clear display of the governors’ lack of understanding of how a nation works.

Ugboaja said: “It doesn’t make any sense because they have not been working.

“Work is not done by age but by skills, routine and process”, he said.
