The council recommended the initiative, which was revealed in a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, on Sunday.
Of the 40 beneficiaries, 15 inmates are set to be released on January 12, 2025. The governor also commuted some death sentences to life imprisonment and reduced other sentences, offering second chances to those who have shown remorse and readiness to reintegrate into society.
This act is in line with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which empowers state governors to pardon or commute sentences.
