Super Falcons seal 2026 WAFCON spot with 3–1 aggregate win over Benin Republic
The Super Falcons have booked their place at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a 1-1 draw against the Amazons of Benin Republic in the second leg of their qualifier on Tuesday in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Nigeria’s earlier 2-0 victory in the first leg in Lome, courtesy of goals from Esther Okoronkwo and Chinwendu Ihezuo, sealed a comfortable 3-1 aggregate win for the nine-time African champions.
Defender Ashleigh Plumptre opened the scoring for Nigeria with a header from Okoronkwo’s corner — her first goal for the Super Falcons since switching allegiance from England in 2017. Benin’s Yasmine Djibril equalised in the 61st minute, but it wasn’t enough to deny Nigeria qualification.

The result ensures the Super Falcons’ spot at next year’s WAFCON, to be held in Morocco from March 17 to April 3, 2026. The tournament will also serve as qualifiers for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Nigeria, defending champions and record 10-time WAFCON winners, will aim to extend their dominance when they return to the continental stage.
