Team Nigeria emerges victorious in Chovken World Championship in Azerbaijan

The Nigeria team clinched bronze at the recent 2024 Chovken World Championship in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Nura Kangiwa, the patron of NSK polo team, revealed the achievement in a statement announced by Joesef Karim, the Media Assistant to the Vice President of the African Region of the International Chovken Federation in Abuja.

Kangiwa, who also serves as the Chairman of the African Region of the International Chovken Federation, celebrated Nigeria’s achievement, highlighting the team’s hard-fought 1-1 draw against Uzbekistan that secured them the bronze medal based on their performance in previous matches.

“This is a historic moment for Nigeria as it marks our debut in a global Chovken competition, an ancient equestrian sport akin to polo,” Kangiwa shared proudly.

Nigeria’s journey to the podium saw them triumph over Germany with a score of 5-0, defeat Poland 4-1, and unfortunately lose to Morocco 4-1.

Hosted from June 10 to 16, the World Chovken Championship featured a competitive lineup including Turkey, Malta, Kuwait, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Poland, Germany, and Nigeria, alongside Azerbaijan.

Chovken, a centuries-old team sport similar to polo, requires horse riders equipped with sticks to navigate the field and score goals by hitting a small ball into designated posts.

Each match consists of two halves, with each lasting 15 minutes of intense playtime.

Team Nigeria showcased their talent with players Yusuf Bello, Shehu Kangiwa, Mukhtar Adhama, and Abdulmalik Badamasi, expertly led by Kangiwa himself.
