Oranges: The juicy secret to better health, by Fatima Ma’aji Muhammad

Story by Fatima Ma’aji MUHAMMAD (Student at Helwan University, Cairo, Egypt)

Few fruits are as universally loved as the humble orange. Bright, refreshing, and bursting with flavour, oranges are more than just a snack, they’re a powerhouse of nutrition and wellness.

One medium orange delivers just 66 calories yet covers 92% of your daily vitamin C needs. That’s the nutrient your body relies on for strong immunity, glowing skin, and better iron absorption.

In fact, while oranges don’t contain much iron themselves, their vitamin C helps prevent anaemia by boosting how well your body absorbs iron from foods like beans and spinach. A splash of orange juice on lentils or a few slices in a salad can make a real difference.

Beyond vitamin C, oranges offer fibre for digestion, potassium for heart health, and a cocktail of antioxidants like flavonoids and carotenoids. These compounds fight inflammation, protect cells, and may even lower risks of heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Cara Cara oranges, for example, are rich in lycopene, the same antioxidant found in tomatoes linked to heart protection.

Oranges also shine when it comes to immune support. Vitamin C fuels natural killer cells and helps the body clear out damaged ones, keeping your defences sharp. Regular citrus intake has been tied to fewer infections and faster recovery.

Whether eaten whole or sipped as juice, oranges are a delicious way to nourish your body. Whole fruits give you more fibre and steady energy, while juice offers a quick antioxidant boost. Just remember moderation keeps the benefits sweet without the sugar spike.

So next time you peel back that bright skin, know you’re holding a golden globe of health. Oranges aren’t just fruit; they’re nature’s daily dose of vitality.
