Tehran rejects ‘baseless’ US accusations of meddling in presidential election

Iran has strongly denied allegations from the United States accusing it of attempting to meddle in the upcoming US presidential election.

On Friday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, dismissed the claims as “baseless” and politically motivated, asserting that the US has no grounds to make such accusations given its own history of interference in other nations’ affairs.

The accusations stem from an annual assessment by the US Department of Homeland Security, which alleged that Iran, along with Russia and China, is trying to influence the November 2024 presidential election.

The report suggests that these countries are using artificial intelligence to spread fake or divisive information to sway voters.

However, Baghaei firmly rejected these claims, calling them part of a larger effort to serve domestic political purposes in the US.

“These repeated and baseless claims, which have been made by some US officials and institutions for some time, are politically motivated and serve domestic political purposes,” Baghaei said in a statement.

He added that the US government, with its long history of illegal interference in other countries, lacks the standing to make such accusations against Tehran.

The allegations of Iranian interference in US elections are not new. In August 2024, the campaign of former US president and current Republican candidate Donald Trump claimed it had been hacked, accusing Iran without presenting evidence.

US intelligence agencies, including the FBI, also alleged that Iranian hackers had sought to share information stolen from Trump’s campaign with Democratic candidate Kamala Harris’s team.

These claims, too, were denied by Iranian authorities, who maintained that they had no interest in interfering in the internal affairs of the United States.

The November 2024 presidential election is expected to be a contentious contest between Trump, representing the Republican Party, and current US Vice President Kamala Harris, running as the Democratic candidate.

Baghaei concluded by reaffirming that Iran has no intention or motivation to interfere in the US electoral process and dismissed the ongoing allegations as part of a broader campaign to discredit Tehran on the international stage.
