Education is the passport to the future, tomorrow belongs to those who plan for it today. Therefore, girl child education is a necessity for the development of our society in the 21st century.
But every girl faces barriers to education caused by poverty, cultural norms and practices, violence, and fragility. Educating the girl child have a wide range of impact on society and human development.
Girl child education is believed to be the backbone of the advanced societies of the world. It is a serious issue that should not be treated lightly. Its impact on societal development is numerous, some of which include;
(a) Girl child education reduces inequality: illiteracy is among the major causes of poverty. Primary education is a lifter for girls by providing them with education they become relevant to the nation and its growth. Educated women can raise their voices to be heard especially to demand equality and fairness on issues that concern them and their families. Having a voice that could be heard leads to a reduction in the rate of domestic and sexual violence.
(b) Education enhanced economic growth: Basic education has a linkage with economic development. Girls’ education has even more positive effects. Education contributes greatly to improving a nation’s productivity, it is as a result of education that income for wage earners and productivity for employers thereby increase the benefit for the society as a whole.
(c) Girl child education promotes economic competitiveness: The major pillar of the knowledge-based economy is an educated and skilled workforce. Therefore, technical innovations and the competitive use of knowledge increase the comparative advantage for women to excel in their businesses.
(d) Lower child mortality as well as maternal mortality rates: Women with education seek medical care, which makes their children look healthier and better nourished. They are less likely to become pregnant at a very young age, they have fewer, better-spaced pregnancies and they go for pre and post-natal care. All these will reduce the rate of mortality among women if given girl child education.
(e) Education for the next generation: Educated girls who become mothers are more likely to send their children to school because they know the importance of educating a child thereby, passing on and multiplying benefits.
In conclusion, girl child education has immense advantages for the development of our societies, because education saves and improves the lives of girls and women to more equitable development, stronger families, better services, and better child health.
