Tinted Windows: Reps seek 90-day compliance grace for Abuja drivers

Story by Victor Itodo ABUH

The House of Representatives has directed the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command to grant vehicle owners a 90-day grace period to comply with the recent crackdown on tinted windows and covered number plates.

The lawmakers also called for an end to indiscriminate harassment of motorists and urged the immediate release of vehicles impounded solely for these violations, provided no other offences are involved. This resolution followed a motion presented by Mukhtar Tolani Shagaya.

In addition, the House instructed the Committee on Police Affairs to collaborate with the Nigeria Police Force leadership to create clear enforcement guidelines.

These guidelines should include proper public awareness campaigns and reasonable timelines to ensure fair and effective implementation of the policy.

The Federal Ministry of Information and Culture was also tasked with working alongside relevant stakeholders to roll out a public enlightenment initiative.

This campaign would educate citizens on the regulations, and how to obtain necessary permits or make required vehicle modifications.

Shagaya highlighted the importance of security in combating crimes such as kidnapping but criticised the abrupt enforcement of the directive.

He said, “The sudden implementation without adequate notice has led to unnecessary harassment of motorists and significant inconvenience to law-abiding citizens.”

He further stressed the economic burden caused by vehicle impoundments, urging authorities to enforce security measures with respect for individual rights and reasonable compliance timelines.
