Tinubu assures Niger of ECOWAS’ commitment to uphold constitutionalism

Information coming in from the Republic of Niger has raised concerns about the country’s highest political leadership, prompting reactions from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Region and advocates of democracy worldwide.

In response to the unsettling developments, the leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has made it abundantly clear that any situation that undermines the democratically-elected government of Niger will not be tolerated.

The ECOWAS leadership firmly rejects any action that hinders the smooth functioning of legitimate authority in Niger or any part of West Africa.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and developments in Niger, and we will do everything within our powers to ensure democracy is firmly planted, nurtured, well rooted, and thrives in our region,” stated Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of Government.

President Tinubu emphasized the importance of upholding universally accepted principles of constitutionalism in protecting hard-earned democracy, asserting that Nigeria stands firmly with the elected government in Niger.

He also conveyed the resolute stance of leaders in the sub-region to defend and preserve constitutional order.

The Chairperson of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State affirmed that consultations with other regional leaders are ongoing to address the situation in Niger effectively.

The unfolding events have garnered significant attention from international communities who are closely monitoring the situation. The stability of Niger is not only crucial for the country itself but also for the broader stability of the West African region.

As more information emerges, leaders within ECOWAS are prepared to take decisive measures to safeguard democracy and ensure that the will of the people remains the guiding force in the country’s governance.
