Tinubu directs Egbetokun’s exit as AIG Tunji Disu set to take over

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has stepped down from office following a directive from President Bola Tinubu, sources within the Presidency have confirmed.

According to insiders, Mr Egbetokun was asked to resign during a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday. Preparations are reportedly underway for a formal handover.

He is expected to be succeeded by Tunji Disu, currently an Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG). Although no official announcement had been made as of press time, sources at both the Presidency and Force Headquarters indicated that arrangements for the transition are in progress.

Mr Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police on 19 June 2023. His appointment was later confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on 31 October 2023. Initially slated for retirement on 4 September 2024 upon attaining the mandatory age of 60, his tenure was extended following an amendment to the Police Act by the National Assembly, allowing an IGP to serve a full four-year term irrespective of age or years of service.

Under the amended law, he was expected to remain in office until October 2027 unless removed by the President.

His time in office drew mixed reactions, with critics raising concerns over alleged human rights violations and other controversies. The Presidency had previously maintained that his continued stay in office was lawful under the revised Police Act 2024.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no formal statement from the Presidency confirming the development. Efforts to reach presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga and Force Public Relations Officer Ben Hundeyin were unsuccessful. However, a senior official indicated that an official announcement would be made soon.

Further details are expected to emerge in due course.
