Tinubu pushes for state police, LG autonomy; Urges Governors to back reforms

President Bola Tinubu has called on governors across Nigeria, particularly those elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to support the push for the establishment of state police and full implementation of local government autonomy.
Speaking at the 14th meeting of the APC National Caucus in Abuja on Thursday, Tinubu stressed that state policing has become necessary to address the country’s growing security challenges.
The President also urged governors to uphold the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy by ensuring that funds allocated to local councils are released to them directly.
Tinubu further appealed for broader inclusion of women in the APC National Caucus to promote gender balance within the party’s leadership structure.

During the meeting, APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yelwata, announced the defection of Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. With the governor’s defection, the party now controls the entire North Central region.
Governor Mutfwang, who was elected on the PDP platform in 2023, becomes the latest prominent opposition figure to join the ruling party.
Meanwhile, the APC chairman also disclosed that the party has fixed January 30, 2026, as the deadline for nationwide electronic membership registration. Yelwata noted that the initiative, which is already underway, will strengthen transparency, data accuracy, and internal democracy within the party.
He encouraged both returning and new members to embrace the digital registration system ahead of the party’s future congresses.
