‘To Reduce Cost’: Tinubu cuts Nigeria’s delegation to UNGA

In a move aimed at reducing the cost of governance, President Bola Tinubu has directed a significant reduction in the size of Nigeria’s official delegation to the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

This decision comes in response to public concerns raised during recent protests over government spending.

Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale revealed on Saturday that Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed the directive during a one-day retreat organized by the State House management for heads of government agencies.

Gbajabiamila emphasized the importance of adhering to statutes, regulations, and presidential directives to ensure efficient service delivery.

Speaking about the forthcoming UNGA, Gbajabiamila noted, “During recent protests, there were talks about reduction in cost of governance. Everyone is waiting to see if Nigeria, as in the past, will send the ‘largest delegation’ to UNGA.”

He continued, “I have received a directive from Mr. President that this time, we will be strict.

If you have no business at the UN General Assembly, do not step foot in America, and this is a directive from Mr. President.”

The Chief of Staff urged all government agencies to comply with the directive, stating that the President is committed to addressing the concerns of Nigerians diligently.

This decision is part of the government’s broader strategy to reduce wasteful spending and ensure that only essential personnel attend international events like the UNGA.
