Trump recalls US ambassador to Nigeria
The United States has recalled its ambassador to Nigeria as part of a sweeping reshuffle of nearly 30 ambassadorial and senior diplomatic positions worldwide by President Donald Trump’s administration.
A US official described the move as a strategic effort to realign America’s diplomatic presence abroad with the president’s “America First” foreign policy agenda.
According to State Department officials who spoke anonymously, most of the diplomats affected were appointed during the Biden administration and will formally conclude their tenures in January. Although they will have the option of returning to Washington for new assignments, their roles as heads of mission will end.

Africa has seen the largest number of changes, with US ambassadors serving in 13 countries — including Nigeria, Burundi, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Uganda — among those recalled. Other regions impacted include the Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, and the Western Hemisphere.
The State Department, however, said the reshuffle was a routine procedure under any administration, stressing that ambassadors serve at the pleasure of the president and are tasked with advancing the administration’s foreign policy priorities.
