TUC backs corps member who criticised Tinubu’s economic policies

Ushie Uguamaye, the Lagos corps member who claimed to have received threats after criticising President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has received backing from the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

TUC President Festus Osifo, speaking on a News Programme on March 16, 2025, explained that the corps member’s comments were made out of frustration. He urged the government to avoid targeting individuals who express dissent and to instead be more tolerant of criticism.

“They (the government) have to develop resilience to understand that people are frustrated, hungry, and tired. If they vent, the government should not personalise it and come after them,” Osifo said.

“Imagine a young lady doing her NYSC service—what could she possibly do to bring down the government? It’s simply frustration that she has expressed.”

Osifo added that the government must be patient and understanding, especially in times when Nigerians are struggling with significant challenges.

Ushie made headlines over the weekend after posting a video on TikTok, where she criticised the government’s policies, calling the president a “terrible leader,” and voiced her frustration with Nigeria’s economic situation.

Following the video’s viral spread, she claimed that NYSC officials pressured her to remove the video and invited her to its Lagos office for questioning.
