UNICAL to surcharge, publish names of graduands yet to collect certificates since the 1980s

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) had threatened to publish names of graduands who have refused to collect their certificates from the institution years after they graduated, the university had given a three-month ultimatum to all the affected graduands who are yet to collect original copies of their certificates.

This was known in an official memo signed by the Registrar of the University, Mr Gabriel Egbe, who explained that the university has over 42,000 unclaimed certificates in the various faculties and institutes. Egbe disclosed that some of the certificate’s date back to the 1980s, and no effort has been made by the owners to reclaim them.

While urging the owners to approach the institution to get their certificates, the university registrar on Wednesday, June 30, said “what we are trying to do now is to ensure that the process of getting certificates becomes seamless so that a situation where certificates are piled up like this doesn’t happen again.

The Registrar added “Management has made contacts with some of the graduands and we have told them that it is free. They are not paying anything for the collection. We just want to clear the backlog of these certificates and ensure that we move on from there”.

Mr Gabriel Egbe in the memo said “The university management is shocked by this abnormality, and therefore directs that all those who have not collected their certificates after several years of graduation should do so immediately. Persons who are acquainted with this group of graduands should please, inform them to come for collection.”

The memo further stressed the institution’s readiness to publish the names of the owners once the three-month given elapses.

“Those who do not do so before the end of three months from the date of this notice will have their names published and will be surcharged subsequently,” he added.
